The Ashes, Day 1

Posted by on July 21, 2005

Well, it’s half way through the middle session and Australia is 9/178 as I head off to bed. Don’t know what the rest of the evening will bring, but one thing is sure: one team came ready to play today. There are still twenty four and a half days play before the series winds up, but this moment belongs to England. Fast, fiery and on top. Even if Australia make 200 today, they’ll struggle to contain the England batsmen for that. The best the Australians can hope for is to move into the second innings on reasonably even footing. Don’t know if they’ll be able to. I’m not writing the team off, not by a long shot, but this moment belongs to England.
