Working in science fiction

Posted by on April 27, 2006

There are some days when working in the science fiction field, however peripherally, is a joy, a challenge and a privilege. There are other days when, however much of a privilege it is, I ask myself what the heck I’m doing. I could simply poke my eye out with a stick for fun, which would at least have the advantage of taking less time.

If you poked your eye out you could wear a patch and be a pirate!

Ah, but after a while, even saying “Argh, there Jim lad” and listening to a parrot saying “Pieces of eight, pieces of eight” must surely tire.

If you played cricket with a pegleg would it confuse the bowler, or just give him more stumps to aim at?

Oh, yes indeed, it gets old. But for the grace of God and all that, eh?

True. But then there’s the call of the sea, the days sailing the Spanish main. The pirate life for me…

PS: Just read a Kage Baker pirate story which was pretty good. Best pirate story in the genre, though: Tim Powers’ On Stranger Tides. Damn fine!
