Hello, Americans!

Posted by on February 28, 2008

Please fix your economy. You are screwing with mine.  Just saw today’s exchange rate. It’s 94 cents on the dollar! What’s that about!?!? I’ve taken a 40% pay hit since I started one regular reviewing gig, and every other one is now paying less and less. No wonder money seems tight. I remember when a ten thousand US dollar check was about $A17,500. Now it’d be about $10,500 or something.  So, Americans, fix your economy! Please. please.

Can I second that? Most of my income is in USD, but I have to pay taxes in GBP. Thankfully rather less of my expenses are in GBP than yours are in AUD. Also the pound is in a tailspin as well.

I would suggest that you ask to be paid in Yen…it’s going to be a while. A long while, I’m thinking.

I third that! The Canuck Buck has gained 20% or more in the last year on the U.S. dollar. It does however, make cars and other things we import from them considerably cheaper.Gas just stays the same. Maybe we need a Universal currency.

Hmm, maybe I should start submitting to Australian publications that pay in Australian dollars! The only upside to the tanking dollar is that I’ve been *very* happy with the few foreign sales I’ve made lately. Euros and pounds go a lot farther than they used to over here.

Canadian publications, especially. But sending a story in is always good.

yeah, it sucketh here in america too. 20% of homes bought in the last 5 years are in “default mortgage” due to over-zealous lending by banks. unemployement is up. inflation is up. everything is tightening up for the election year. give us 8 months and IF we don’t hit a recession (which is not a sure thing, as some say) then we shall be back on track by august. then again….

Oddly, the declining US dollar has had surprisingly little effect on the price of books imported from the US. I have in my hand Westerfeld’s Extras, which is $16.99 in the USA and $19.99 in Canada. I understand that being Canadian is worth a premium but a 20% surcharge for the wisdom of having stayed out of that 1776 mess seems a bit much.

If the Democrats live up to their promise of repudiating NAFTA, the resulting economic tailspin up here in Canada should bring down the value of the Canuckbuck relative to the greenback.
