So Orangey, who had been mauled by Tony the Tangerine Barracuda, died yesterday. We’re a sentimental family, so now that Orangey is sleeping with the fishes, we set out to get a replacement. We came home with an unnamed black molly, an unnamed speckled fantail, and a second water snail called Pliny the Younger. You can guess who named him. His job is to help keep Tony’s tank clean, which he seems to be setting to with vigor. There’s little for him to explore, but hopefully he’ll cope as well as Geoffrey (aka Nyarlothotep) has over in the main tank. Hmm. I think I can see a larger tank in our future.
I didn’t realise you were a fishy type! How very cool. Sorry to hear about the death, of course, but still… new fish! Nice. I hope you got a female molly, ‘cos otherwise chances are she might have been impregnated in the shop and soon be spawning a myriad babies… which, unless you catch them, will get et so it’s not a big deal. I had a mystery snail for a while – his name was Ajax (as in the hero, of course, because he was so mighty), but my angels (one of whom I named Hera, because she was such a bitch) bullied him to death… which was sad. Hope these new fish settle in well!
Well, I’ve had various fishy period. I had a tropical tank in my bedroom for a while when I was still in high school. Not a good idea. The filter was way noisy and the mortality rate was high. When the last of us kids moved out of home my folks turned off the swimming pool filter, put in fish. Ended up with angels bigger than your hand. Very cool. This lot is very experimental. Jess, my 7 year old, wants pets but is scared of cats and dogs, so we’re trying fish. Right now we have a small tank with a couple fantails, black molly, a bronze comet and a water snail. The snail is kinda funky and very healthy. There’s also a very small tank for Tony the Tangerine Barracuda, which he now shares with Pliny the Younger (a snail). We’ll see how it goes.
Jonathan, you heard it here first. Sophie came in around 11pm to let me know that she decided the new fantail should be called Gemstone. She looked very pleased with herself. She then proposed the full name should be Gemstone Twinklebottom. Yes, I sent her back to bed.
Heh – your snail would have been in good company with the apple snail I had a while back – he was called Ajax! Ah, the classics: rife with good names to steal. Tony, though… hmm, Antony is good for a barracuda… Angels bigger than my hand would be something to see. They’re terrors, are angels. I love them.
Names have shifted here. The big snail in the main tank remains, solidly, Geoffrey. In the small tank, Tony is now Fat Tony (he put on weight). That led to a name change for the snail, who is his small offsider – he is now Guido. So, we have Fat Tony and Guido in a small tank :)
