quiet night

I think I need some kind of refreshing / re-energising experience.  Today was the kind of day that all of us have – not at all bad, but tiring and kind of draining.  I’m currently sitting in the backyard, hiding behind the clothes hoist, trying to get a quiet moment while children run around, plundering the house.  The fish are dying again (something I can’t diagnose, but we’re doing everything we can).  There’s nowhere quiet to sit.  I’m not in a reading mood.  And I’m aware of the need to be doing things I’m not.  sigh.  Maybe a quiet night will help.

My lovely new apple snails died, without ever coming out of their shells. Apparently Melbourne’s water has increased copper due to the drought – but inly in some areas – which is lethal to the darlings. But there was no mention of this when I bought them… So I hope your fish issues can be cleared up!

I’m trying. We’ve had too many fatalities over the past month. Apple snails, huh? We were looking at pictures of them recently. Very cool. I want to move up to a bigger tank, but I want to get the management of this one sorted first. I *think* the filter may be the issue.

Good filter is the key, I think. We have a four foot tank, with… I forget how many fish. 30? 40? With a brilliant filter, we don’t have to do many water changes at all, which is a relief.

I think we’re going to have to make that kind of commitment. I figure, right now, I’m going to work out what I’m doing with this small tank – limit the fatalities and get some fresher experience. When I’ve done that, on to bigger and speckier things. 30 or so fish. Wow. Tropical?

Yup, tropical… I counted tonight, we have about 55 inches of fish (fish length minus tail). We have a 50 gallon tank, with – for reasons that are unclear to me – two large filters on it. I said I wanted a goldfish bowl, and that’s what I got… about 6 years ago now.
