Young adult science fiction, gender, race, Scott Westerfeld’s Behemoth, the very sad passing of Ralph Vicinanza, Australian SF compared to SF from the rest of the world: these and other things were discussed when Gary and I fired up podcast #20 this morning. It seemed to go pretty well. We hope you enjoy it!
Things slowly get back to normal as Gary and I jump back into the pod to discuss radical new hard SF, Interzone, Paul McAuley, Stephen Baxter, whether Mundane SF makes any sense, what we’ve been reading and some other stuff in what struck me as we were chatting as a particularly crunchy podcast. I did ask for suggestions on Twitter, but got so involved in this that I didn’t get to them. I’ve made note though, and we’ll get to them next week!
We’re back! This morning I entered the pod here in Perth, fired up Skype and called Gary in Chicago. He’s just back from California, and I’m not long back from Aussiecon in Melbourne so we chatted about awards, eligibility and nominations, the 100 Days, and a lot of other things. It’s good to be recording again, and we’ll try not to miss any more episodes as we count down to World Fantasy and Columbus!
Well, I’ve been away and not podcasting. Went to Melbourne. Gary’s been out and about as well, visiting California for the Writers of the Future and other reasons. We’ll be back as normal this coming weekend, but in the meantime I called up two members of the Coode St Feminist Advisory Committee, Alisa and Tansy, to discuss all sorts of things to do with science fiction, awards, awareness and other stuff. It was a lot of fun to do, and I’m sure there’ll be more crossover podcasts in the months ahead.
Although we’re having a Federal election here in Australia, and I had to get out and fulfil my democratic obligations, I still found time to jump on to Skype and call Gary to talk about things science-fictional. We covered reviewing, the end of “books you don’t need to read’, The Wesleyan Anthology of Science Fiction, our awesome technical skills as podcasters, the Coode Street Feminist Advisory Committee (we may need t-shirts), and all sorts of other things in another longish podcast. We have also accepted we could talk forever – I think we chatted for more than an hour that we didn’t record. We hope you enjoy it!
Edit: People have had problems with this episode. I’ve republished it on the new host. Hope that solves the problem.
