I’ll do a proper post about my likely novella nominees for the Hugo, but I was pondering what I’d put into my old Best Short Novels series if I was still editing it for the Science Fiction Book Club.
After a bit of reflection I came up with the following list. I wasn’t restricted to Hugo length requirements, so one story is actually a long novelette, but this list would still come close to 200,000 words which is about right for the old series.
So, herewith, the fantasy contents for Best Short Novels: 2013.
- “Gatewayâ€, Nina Allen (Stardust)
- “Wakulla Springsâ€, Andy Duncan & Ellen Klages (Tor.com)
- “Black Helicoptersâ€, Caitlin R. Kiernan (Subterranean Press)
- “Iseul’s Lexiconâ€, Yoon Ha Lee (Conservation of Shadows)
- “The Princess and the Queenâ€, George R.R. Martin (Dangerous Women)
- “The Sun and Iâ€, K J Parker (Subterranean, Summer 2013)
- “Precious Mentalâ€, Robert Reed (Asimov’s, 6/13)
- “Oneâ€, Nancy Kress (Tor.com, 7/17/13)
I would buy this if it was available. I have all the other Best Short Novel books you edited. It was a pity another publisher didn’t pick up the series. Still, it’s nice to see what you would have put in it, if it was available.
I would jump at the chance of buying that book. I love Subterranean Press but do wish that there were affordable digital editions of many of their releases as I am neither sharp enough nor rich enough to purchase their very limited edition books but Black Helicopters is a book I would love to read.
All of the other stories are stories I am very keen to read too.
I wish there was a more easily available edition of “Black Helicopters”. It’s fine work and definitely worth reading.
