I saw the game. You wuz robbed. Right when it counted, the umps gave Collingwood a number of very dicey decisions, including not pinging Buckley for the most blatantly deliberate out-of-bounds I’ve seen in a long time. I was a little bit indignant about this until I saw the Hawks-Kangaroos match, where the umpires were worth four or five goals to the ‘Roos in a low-scoring match. I’m sure Russ Farr nearly put himself into a coma over the umpiring. I say this as a supporter of none of the above teams, and even though a natural Collingwood antagonist, I’ve been equally inhospitable towards West Coast over its mishandling of player conduct the last 2-3 years.
I hate to blame umpires because they have a hard job, but they *really* need to improve the quality of the refereeing in AFL. Compared to most other professional sports, the impactful error rate is way too high.
